Edward James Pull has been convicted in connection to the 2017 killing of his father and a brutal assault on his mother, according to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office.
On May 23, 2025, a Kern County jury found Pull guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his father. He was also convicted of multiple charges related to his mother’s assault, including:
-
Assault with an AR-15 style rifle
-
Causing great bodily injury
-
False imprisonment
-
Elder abuse
-
Being a felon in possession of a firearm
The jury also upheld several firearm-related and great bodily injury enhancements.
During a separate bench trial, a judge ruled that several aggravating factors were true, including Pull’s three prior felony convictions from 2006 for lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14.
According to prosecutors, the violence unfolded in the early morning hours of December 11, 2017. Bakersfield police responded to what was initially reported as a robbery. Officers found both victims lying on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds.
At first, Pull claimed a robber had broken into their home, killed his father, and assaulted his mother. However, once his mother was safe, she revealed the truth to officers: her son was the attacker.
Video surveillance from inside the house confirmed her account. It showed Pull emerging from his room wearing a mask and gloves, armed with a loaded AR-15 style MR carbine. He stormed into his father’s room, pointed the weapon at him, and began shouting.
Hearing the commotion, his mother entered the room. Pull struck her over the head with the rifle, inflicting an eight-inch gash and additional injuries across her body.
Edward William, the father, tried to defend his wife, but Pull turned the gun on him. He shot his father twice—once in the abdomen and once in the leg—while continuing the assault.
Despite his father’s injuries, Pull waited four hours before calling for help. During that time, he forced his mother to assist in cleaning up the scene, destroying evidence, and fabricating a story for the police.
Edward William was rushed to the hospital and underwent multiple surgeries. He died a week later from the abdominal gunshot wound.
“This was a heinous and calculated act, one that the victims never saw coming. Not only did the defendant take the life of his own father, but he also attempted to cover it up and force his mother into being his accomplice. Yet despite his efforts to evade accountability, justice prevailed in the end,” said Kern County District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer.
Pull is scheduled to be sentenced on July 15, 2025, and faces multiple life terms.
