U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested 54-year-old Ramon Morales-Reyes, a Mexican national, after he allegedly threatened to assassinate former President Donald Trump in a handwritten letter.
According to ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Morales-Reyes was taken into custody on May 22 in Wisconsin. The arrest came shortly after ICE received the disturbing letter, in which Morales-Reyes detailed plans to shoot Trump at one of his rallies and then return to Mexico.
Authorities revealed that Morales-Reyes had illegally entered the U.S. multiple times between 1998 and 2005. In the letter, he expressed anger over immigration policies and stated his intention to “use my 30 yard 6 to shoot your precious president in his head.”
“We are tired of this President messing with us Mexicans… I think it is time Donald J. Trump get what he has coming to him… I will see him at one of his big rallies,” the letter reportedly read.
The letter, sent directly to an ICE intelligence officer, triggered swift action. DHS identified Morales-Reyes as the author and ICE agents arrested him the next day.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem strongly condemned the threat.
“Thanks to our ICE officers, this illegal alien who threatened to assassinate President Trump is behind bars,” Noem said. “This comes not even a year after President Trump was shot in Butler, Pennsylvania, and less than two weeks after former FBI Director Comey called for the President’s assassination.”
She also urged political and media figures to lower the intensity of their rhetoric, warning that such language could spark real-world violence.
ICE confirmed that Morales-Reyes has a prior criminal record, including felony hit-and-run, criminal damage to property, and disorderly conduct with a domestic abuse modifier. He is currently being held at Dodge County Jail in Juneau, Wisconsin, as deportation proceedings move forward.
