A tragic shooting in Haubstadt, Indiana, has left a Bakersfield family grieving after three of their loved ones were killed. The alleged shooter is 77-year-old Patrick Waite—the husband of one of the victims.
Authorities identified the victims as 61-year-old Alma Waite, her 81-year-old mother Gloria Tapia, and her 39-year-old son Fernando Tapia Ramirez Sr. All three had lived in the Bakersfield area before moving to Indiana a few years ago.
Alma’s 44-year-old son was also shot and critically injured. He remains hospitalized, and no new updates on his condition have been released.
According to the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a 911 call placed by Patrick Waite last Thursday evening. When they arrived, officers found the three victims deceased and Waite still at the scene.
Court documents reveal that Waite had been married to Alma for nearly two years. The couple had reportedly been discussing divorce, which Waite did not want. Before the shooting, he told authorities Alma had expressed frustration with him and mentioned homeownership, which triggered the deadly encounter. He admitted to shooting Alma and then opened fire on other family members present in the home.
In total, eight people were inside the house at the time. Four were unharmed.
Waite now faces three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. He appeared in court on Monday and is due back in late July.
