Maya Disney was a victim of countless systemic failures in California: public schools that did not provide the support she deserved, a deeply punitive carceral system, horrific gaps in mental healthcare, and so much more. Weeks before she lost her life to suicide, Disney saw how American media would write her own story.

Today we speak with her mother, Rose Disney, on the nuances of Maya’s life, and why telling her story is important, not least because it happens to marginalized Americans every day.
